Alfred M. Linn, son of Hugh and Mary Ann (Saylor) Linn, is found with his parents in the 1850 and 1860 census. The family lived in Fulton County in 1850 and Bedford County in 1860.[1][2] In 1870, he and his brother William were living and working as laborers in Allegany County, Maryland with a post office address of Flintstone.[3]
In his father's 1879 will, Alfred was bequeathed "the 'Old Mill House' for his own proper use and benefit" but was directed to pay his brother William $100 therefrom.[4] As it turned out, however, Alfred had other intentions.
He has not been found anywhere in the 1880 census but apparently was on his way to West Virginia, where he was married in about 1882. His bride was Rhoda Allender, daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Largent) Allender. The couple's eldest child, Thomas Jefferson Linn, was born on 6 October 1882 in Hampshire County, West Virginia.[5] By the year 1900, eight children had been born to Alfred and Rhoda but, sadly, only four survived while three had died of diptheria and another is unaccounted for.[6] Unfortunately, there is a great deal of error and contradiction in the 1900 census. For the children, the enumerator wrote birth dates of October 1882, October 1885, August 1897, and September 1890 (in that order) but ages of 7, 4, 2, and 9 (in the same order).[7] Fortunately, birth registrations and death certificates cited on profiles for the relevant children provide clarification.
Sometime between 1900 and 1906, the family moved to Clark County, Ohio and settled in Bethel Township, where Alfred continued to farm. Two additional children were born to the couple before 1910.[8]
