Biography

John Smith Linville was born on 5 September 1815 at NC. He married Mary Jane Sullivan, daughter of Benjamin Sullivan and Elizabeth Marshall, on 1 September 1841 at Stokes County, NC. John Smith Linville moved at Cloverdale, IN, in 1848 The family moved from NC in 1848 in a schooner wagon and one or two horses. They settled near Cloverdale, IN and lived there for a short time before moving to Westland, IN three miles east of Putnamville, IN. They lived in a log house on Old National Road (Route #40). He and Mary Jane Sullivan appeared on the census of 1850 at Jefferson, Putnam County, IN. From Milton's, John's brother, will in 1876, it indicates John's wife was Elizabeth Roberson. So John was apparently married a second time. John Smith Linville and Mary Jane Sullivan appeared on the census of 1880 at Warren, Putnam County, IN. John Smith Linville died on 21 January 1889 at Putnam County, IN, at age 73. He was buried at Deer Creek Cem., Putnam County, IN.
