Graf zur Lippe 1536 - 1563 |
Succeeded by Simon VI |
Bernhard was the second but eldest surviving son of Simon V, Graf zur Lippe (Count in Lippe), and the eldest son of Simon's second wife, Magdalene von Mansfeld.[1] Bernhard was born 6 December 1526[2] or 6 December 1527.[1]
Bernhard technically succeeded as Bernhard VIII, Graf zur Lippe, on the death of his father 17 September 1536[1] but as he was still a minor Lippe was ruled by a regency consisting of Philipp, Landgraf von Hessen, Adolf, Graf von Schaumburg, and Jobst, Graf von der Hoya. Bernhard took over the government of Lippe from 1547.[3]
He married 8 May 1550, Katharine, Gräfin von Waldeck-Eisenberg,[1] daughter of Philipp III, Graf von Waldeck-Eisenberg, and his second wife, Anna, Prinzessin von Kleve.[2]
They had the following issue;[1]
Bernhard VIII, died 15 April 1563,[1] and was succeeded by his son Simon VI, under the regency of Bernhard's brother.
