Nikolaus was the son of [[Heinrich II von der Lippe and his mother's maiden name was von Sundis, the daughter of Johannes von Sundis.
Nikolaus became councillor of the monestary St. Juergen am Strande in 1399 and in 1411 the administrator of the same. In 1414 he was elected mayor of the city of Stralsund and remained so until his death in 1433.
In January 1428 there was a rising by the brewers who were having financial difficulties because of the war between the Hanseatic cities and Erik, king of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Nikolaus stopped the rebellion and beheaded six of the leaders.
The following year, on May 5, 1429, a Danish fleet appeared, plundered and devastated the harbor, destroying the ships that lay there. Two days later six armed merchant ships from Lübeck and Wismar arrived and von der Lippe prepared a counter attack on the Danes who were on their way back from the Bay of Greifswald. May 9 the battle of Dänholm took place where the Danish fleet was defeated.
In December 1430 Stralsund made peace with King Erik.
Nikolaus was married two times. First to Magdalena von Unna and around 1429 he married Kuneke von Schulow, whom he had two daughters with.
During the second world war the German fleet rebuilt and named one of their ships Von der Lippe in honour of Nikolaus defeat of the Danish fleet in 1429.[1]
