Biography
Bessie, daughter of Luther Lippy and Cecelia Virginia "Celia" Wine, was born 8 August 1905 in Carroll County, Maryland.[1] In 1910 her family resided in Manchester, Carroll County, where her father Luther (age 34) supported his family by cultivating his own land. The household included himself, his wife Cecilia V. (33), Bessie Pauline (4), and her siblings Edgar Edward (11), Melvin Amandus (8), Annie Mabel (7), Paul Mervin (3) and Grace A. (2).[2][3]
About 1918, the family moved to West Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania, where they were to be found in 1920. The household at that time consisted of Luther (43, farmer on rented land), Celia V. (43), Bessie Pauline (14), and her siblings Edgar Edward (21, farmer on the home farm), Melvin Amandus (19), Annie Mabel (16), Paul Mervin (13), Grace A. (12), Mary Helen (9), Elva M. (8), Naomi M. (5) and Malcolm L. (2).[4]
On 21 February 1923 in York County, she married Ray Alvin Mummert,[5][citation needed] son of Henry Mummert and Ellen Milheim. (Her husband's brother Wiley married her sister Anna Mabel.) Bessie and Roy had two children, including a living daughter and:
By 1930 the couple had settled in Hanover, York County, where the family included Ray A. (age 30, twister in a rope mill), Bessie P. (24), a four-year-old daughter and Leroy (2).[5] Leroy died before 1940, when the household in Hanover included only Ray (age 40, cordage mill foreman), Bessie P. (34, glove factory stitcher), and their fourteen-year-old daughter.[6]
"She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and had been employed by Hanover Glove Manufacturing for 33 years before she retired in 1969."[7]
Ray died in 1976.[8] Bessie survived him almost two decades succumbing to death on 10 June 1995 in Hanover[1] She was buried there at Rest Haven Cemetery.[9] [8] [7] [9] [1] [5] [6] [2] [3] [4]
