Biography

George Nelson Lipscomb
Father: Theodoric Erwin Lipscomb
Mother: Adeline Elvira Walker

Florence Lipscomb Ridgway remembers: George Nelson Lipscomb, my father, was 38 when he married. He had laundries in Austin, TX and San Marcos, TX before settling in Gonzales. He had attended a one-teacher school as a child. All grades were taught in one room. So, he learned from the recitations of other classes as well as from his own lessons. The family made a number of moves during his childhood. Once, he spent some time in Harlan, KY where he worked in a store for his uncle (A Walker, I assume). My father suffered from Asthma especially when goldenrod was in bloom. One day, he kissed his baby sister, aunt Frankie, and left home without telling anyone he was going away. He came to Texas. I believe he got his first job in Houston. He was an express messenger for Wells Fargo. One route was to Purcell, Indian Territory (Now Oklahoma). I had a book, The Pleasures of Hope and Favorite Poems by Thomas Campbell and The Pleasures of Memory by Samuel Rogers. In the flyleaf of each is written G. N. Lipscomb, Purcell, I. T. Aug. 15, 1896. Later, Wells Fargo sent him to San Antonio where he replaced a man who had been killed by train robbers on the run from San Antonio to Spofford, Texas. After a time, daddy decided to go into the laundry business. He first operated a laundry in Austin on Congress Street next door to Lammie’s Candy Store. By this time, my Uncle Charlie had joined daddy and he subsequently met and married my aunt Dixie in Austin. The Colorado river got a big rise and water got into the laundry. Uncle Charlie and Aunt Dixie left Austin and Daddy moved the laundry to higher ground in San Marcos but stayed there only a few weeks. His next move was to Gonzales in 1898, I believe. Daddy rented a building near the dam on the Guadalupe River (I think Uncle Charlie came and worked there briefly, just between jobs). After a time, daddy bought a house and building just west of the Plaza Hotel in Gonzales. The site was still near the river, but on higher ground. This property was bought from R. H. Walker who had come from TN. Possibly, he was a relative? At age 38, my father, George Nelson Lipscomb owned a house on St Johns Street next to the laundry and he married Iris Booth at the Presbyterian manse in Gonzales on 29 January 1905. In the house on St. Johns Street, all my brothers and sisters and I were born, and my father died there in 1943. [1]
