Biography

Warin was born c1330 about Easter, probably at Kingston Lisle in Sparsholt, Berkshire, England; Age 24, 26, & 30 and more in 1360, the son of Gerald Lisle 1st Lord Lisle and Eleanor FitzAlan (See fathers IPM)

Family

before 1359 He married firstly Margaret Pipard, widow of Robert FitzEllis, daughter and co-heir of Sir William Pipard and Margery. They had 2 children. [1][2]

  1. Gerard Lisle
  2. Margaret Lisle

Margaret his first wife died in 1375 [3]

After 1376 he married Joan, widow successively of John Wynnow and Nicholas de Tamworth, Knt. (died 1376) They had no issue [4]

The abbot had previously leased the manor of Letcombe Regis for life to Sir Nicholas de Tamworth and his wife Joan, and it was confirmed to them by the king in 1361 and they received a grant of free warren here in 1367. After the death of Sir Nicholas Joan married Warin de Lisle, and later she took as her third husband Sir Gilbert Talbot. She died in 1392, when the manor was confirmed to Gilbert, who appears to have died before 24 April 1399, as the manor was then granted to Simon Felbrigg. [5]

Career

1359 He set out for France with Henry, Earl of Lancaster. In the same chancery roll he is named as the nephew of Warin de Lisle, his uncle still being alive. [3]

1360 he had livery of his father's lands; his uncle, Richard, Earl of Arundel, undertook to answer should it be found that any lands were held in chief. He presented to the church of Stowe, Northamptonshire in 1360, and to the church of Mundford, Norfolk in 1361, 1362, and 1376. [4]

1363 The King was not happy with him for failing to effectively deal with those given to pillaging, larceny and other outrages in the counties of Wiltshire, Berkshire, Southampton and elsewhere. He was mandated to diligently attend to this with his keepers of the peace or with his own household on pain of being treated as a favourer of those malefactors. [6]

1364 made a commissioner of the peace in Berkshire.[7]

1366 He was one of the feoffees of his uncle, Richard, Earl of Arundel [3]

1369- He was summoned to Parliament from 6 April 1369 to 24 March 1381/2, by writs directed Warino de Insula. [3]

1369 he had protection on going overseas in the company of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and at about the same time he was appointed captain and keeper of Portsmouth.[4]

1370 he was paid £600 by the king for the expenses of himself, 29 men at arms, and 40 archers in the recent war, they being in the retinue of the king.[4]

1377 A "licence to crenellate" (generally interpreted as permission to build) the castle at Shirburn was granted to him, with actual construction taking place around 1378.[8]

1380 Still engaged in the wars in France he was nevertheless sent on the king's service into Ireland. [3]

1381 Warin de Lisle, John Lovell, Hugh Segrave, Robert Grey of Retherfeld, Gilbert Was, Thomas Priour, Edmund Stonore; and John James, were named in the county of Oxford to put down insurrection in Kent.[9]

Death

He died on 28 June 1382 and his widow Margaret died 27 Apr. 1392, holding lands in dower from both her husbands. [3]

Research Notes

Said to be 5th Lord Tyeys according to modern doctrine [3]

This Sir William Pipard, though described as of the county of Cornwall, Avould rather appear to have been of Wilts. He was the son of Stephen Pipard and had two daughters and heirs: Margaret, the eldest married, first Robertt le Fitz Elys; Sir William Pipard, by his charter, settled upon them and their issue, the manor of Nethercote in Wilts, in default remainder to Stephen Pipard father of the said William for life, and after his death to revert to the grantor. By Eobert le Fitz Elys she had no issue, after whose death she took to her second husband Warine de L'Isle. She died 3rd August 1375, leaving a son Gerard aged 15 years, and daughter Margaret. Matilda, the other daughter and coheir of Sir William Pipard, became the wife of Osbert Hamely, and was aged 30 years on her sister's death. (Inquistion post mortem 49th Edward ITI, part 1, No. 73.)
