Anne Lister was born on 3 April 1791, daughter of Jeremy Lister and Rebecca nee Battle (1770-1817).[1] and was baptised on 12 September 1791 at St John the Baptist, Halifax.[2]
In 1834 she took communion with her partner, Ann Walker at Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York, which in their view married them. Their union is considered to be the first lesbian marriage to be held in Britain.[3]
In his history of the Sutherlands of Skibo Castle, Tony Savory[citation needed] notes that Anne Lister died in Russia in 1840 while she and Ann Walker were touring the country. He was a descendant of Ann Walker's sister Elizabeth.
Monumental inscription in Halifax parish church: "In memory of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall, who died the 22d Septr 1840 at KOUTAIS in GEORGIA, and was interred here the 29th April 1841, AEt 49".[4]
