Birth: 1705 Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Death: unknow Prosperity Newberry County South Carolina, USA

Johann Bernhard 'John Bernard' LOEWENSTEIN, born circa 1705, Baden-Württemberg, changed his name to LIVINGSTON when the family migrated into Dutch Forks area, along Cannons Creek, in Newberry District, South Caorlina in the early 1750's.

Jan Barned and Hans Martin Leristeyn left Dühren, Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1727 (W. Hacker "Auswandererung vom Unteren Neckar") from Rotterdam, arriving September 18, 1727 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the Palatine Ship 'William and Sarah' [William HILL, Master] with records indicating that Johann Bernard Loewenstein [Jan Barne'd LERINSTEY] was 22 years old [one member emigrating in his party] and Hans Martin Loewenstein [Hans Mart'n LERISTYN] was 24 years old [one member emigrating in his party].

Johann Bernard and Hans Martin Loewenstein at first settled in Lancaster County, PA, where the families were members of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church. The Loewensteins then moved to Frederick County, MD.

About 1750, Bernard Loewenstein moved to the Dutch Fork of SC. His petition for land was heard at the meeting of March 5, 1749/50 of the South Carolina Provincial Council. He was granted a 350 acre tract on Cannons Creek near Prosperity, South Carolina.

The family went by the name Livingston after moving to South Carolina.

Johann Bernhard / Barnard LOEWENSTEIN / LIVINGSTON had three sons: John L.,, Martin, and Michael who were active Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. The "Ordinance to Prevent Persons" (South Carolina General Assembly), signed 8 November 1779 by Governor Rutledge, placed a death warrant on John and Martin Livingston. Son, Martin LIVINGSTON was killed on 24 April 1781, presumably at Camden, South Carolina (M. J. Clark, "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War, Vol. 1"). This was the day before the Battle of Hobkirk Hill, near Camden, South Carolina.

Livingston-3061 and Livingston-2231 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate... Surname at birth needs to be changed to Loewenstein!

There seems to be other evidence to support the comment in the Biography section that this Johann Bernhard Livingston aka Loewenstein is connected to the wrong parents. The comment is:

--> checked lutheran birth entries in 1705 in Dühren. There´s no son of Hans Andreas Liebenstein born with this name.

This link doesn't list Johann Bernhard Livingston aka Loewenstein as a son of that couple either:

I ordered the book 'from Harleyville to Beulah Land' on the Livingston and Williamson families, among others and am just beginning to go through it.

The book states:

'Johannes Bernhardt Liebenstein was born in 1704 in Baden, Germany, the son of George Liebenstein and Maria Magdalena Lauseher. He and his brother Hans Martin left Germany in 1727, arriving in Philadelphia that year. Johannes was first married to Maria Sybylla in about 1728. They had four children....In 1739, they were divorced. Bernhardt's first wife and four children kept the name of Liebenstein or Lowenstein...Bernhardt Liebenstein changed his name to Bernard Livingston after he married his second wife, Margaret Smallgrove in the 1740s. They had four children: Martin Luther, John, Bernard and Michael. "

His spouses: Smallgrove_or_Sybilla-1 and Loewenstein-202 appear to be the same person. I submitted a merge proposal for them. I show his spouse to be as follows:

Name: Maria Sibylla Salzgeber Born: 10 Mar 1709 in Germany Marriage: 1728 Died: 9 Mar 1776 in South Carolina

I am searching for the information I was provided for this. A lot of it came from this website: http://dutchforkchapter.org/html/livingston.html which now appears to be decommissioned. However you can get to the home page at: http://dutchforkchapter.org and search "Livingston".

Livingston-2231 and Loewenstein-201 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same person. The original name was either Lowenstien or Leibenstien

Hi,

I was doing some work on the Livingstons of NY. I happened upon this line which seems unrelated, but was wondering why Martin Luther Livingston father was Loewenstein. Was it just a name change? That seems to suggest that this Livingston branch is not Scottish at all, but instead German. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks, James
