1st Governor of New Jersey Yale Graduate VIII. William, b. 8th November, 1723; d. 25th July, 1790; graduate of Yale, 1741; Member of the Provincial Assembly, 1759-1761; Governor of New Jersey, 1776-1790, LL.D., 1788; m. circa 1745, Susannah FRENCH, bapt. 19th June, 1723, d. 17th July, 1789. (Colonial Families in the U.S.) After he purchased a farm at Elizabethtown, NJ; he erected a mansion which he named Liberty Hall. He was a member of the Continental Congress from NJ in 1774, 1775, and 1776; but having been appointed a Brigadier General in 1775, he was in actual command of the US forces at Elizabethtown on July 4, 1776, so he could not sign the Declaration of Independence. In August 1776, he was elected to Governor of NJ
