Joseph Skipp Lloyd was baptised on 22 February 1811 at Abinghall, Gloucestershire, England to Joseph Lloyd and Penelope. The Forest of Dean Family History Trust has his middle name misspelt as Ship, with the baptism at Abenhall Parish Chapel, and the additional note that his father was known as Joseph Junior. There is also an Ancestry 'England Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975' record that has his middle name spelt Skip, with the alternative place name spelling as Abinghall. Approximate birth years derived from England Census' are in the 1841 Census, 1816 from age 25; the 1851 Census, 1811 from age 40, and the 1881 Census, 1821 from age 60!
An Ancestry Family Tree has that his 3 brothers, Henry, George and Francis, were also born/baptised in Abinghall, in 1812, 1816 and 1824 respectively[1]. It also has a notice that Joseph Skipp Lloyd Esq. was one of a list of Gentlemen called to the Bar in London, in 1836. Prior to that Joseph Lloyd Skipp went to Oxford University, and is mentioned in the Oxford University Calender for 1831 and for 1832 as being at St John's College, where he would gain an M.A Degree (see below).
In the 1841 England Census, Joseph [Skipp] Lloyd gave his age as 25 and was living at Gunns Mills in the Parish of Abinghall, Country of Gloucestershire, with his father Joseph Lloyd (60), a Paper Manufacturer, mother Penelope Lloyd (50), brother Francis Lloyd (15), and 3 non-family members[2].
His father passed away on 9 August 1842 at Abinghall House, Abenhall, Gloucestershire, England, and after that, on 23 February 1843, his son had the property advertised for sale in the Worcestershire Journal (Source: AWL). In the following month on 30 March 1843, the appointment of Joseph Skipp Lloyd as one of her Majesty's Hon. Corp of Gentlemen at Arms, by Lord Forester was announced. (Source: 'Morning Post London' and 'London Standard' - AWL).
In the 1851 England Census, Joseph S Lloyd, giving his age as 40, was one of many Visitors staying at 14 Bedford Place, in the Parish of St George Bloomsbury, County of Middlesex. He gave his occupation as Barrister not practising and Gentleman at Arms[3].
Neither an 1861 nor an 1871 England Census has been found for Joseph Skipp Lloyd.
Bernard Burke, 1864, 'General Armory for England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales', has an entry for "Lloyd (Flaxley Grange, co. Gloucester; granted to Joseph Skipp Lloyd, Esq., M.A. Oxford, Barrister-at-Law, formerly Clerk of the Cheque and Adjutant of H.M. Body Guard of Gentleman-at-Arms, eldest son of Joseph Lloyd, Esq., of Abinghall, co. Gloucester, by Penelope Skipp, his wife, dau. and co-heir of George Skipp, Esq., of Flaxley Grange, a descendant of John Skipp, Bishop of Hereford, 1539-52, Lord Almoner to Queen Anne Boleyn)". [This is followed by a description of the Armory].
On 28 October 1876, Joseph Skipp Lloyd married Ellen Sarah Johnson in Dover, Kent, England[4]. The specific date comes from a newspaper cutting - "Mr J Skipp Lloyd, of The Grange and Abing Hall, Gloucestershire, to Ellen, daughter of the late Mr Felix Johnson, of Somerton, Oxon, Oct. 28." (see ref.1). At the time Joseph was about 65 years of age and Ellen 18. The England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915, confirms the marriage as being in the October quarter of 1876 in Dover.
In 1878, Joseph Skipp Lloyd had a son named after him, Joseph Skipp Lloyd, who was buried on 17 August 1878 in Dover, England. (England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991). He had been baptised to Joseph Skipp Lloyd and Ellen Sarah Lloyd on 29 April 1878 in Dover, Kent, England. (England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975).
Joseph Skipp Lloyd was the owner of Gunn's Mill Paper Company just prior to its closure in about 1879. It was managed for him by Henry Afleck in 1876[5]. Perhaps this was the end of the association of the Lloyd family with paper manufacturing?
There is a lot of scribbling over the copy of the 1881 England Census form used by Ancestry where the names of Joseph Skipp Lloyd and his wife 'Elainer' Lloyd are but it seems that the original had them at Lion Mansion with Joseph as Head Boarder, aged 60, a Barrister at Law, born in Abinghall, Gloster, and Elainer, aged 19, born in Fulham, Middlesex. The Census was taken in District 1, Kemp Town, Brighton, Sussex[6].
They had a 2nd son, Eugine Skipp Lloyd, who was baptised on 29 June 1881 in Brighton, Sussex, England, to Joseph Skipp Lloyd and Ellen Sarah Lloyd. Sadly he passed away on 10 February 1889, aged 7 years, also in Sussex.
Only 2 years later Joseph Skipp Lloyd (Snr.) formerly of Lion Mansion, Brighton, Sussex passed away on 25 March 1891 at "Grand" Hotel, Brighton, Sussex, England[7][8]
Probate was granted on 23 April 1891 at Lewes, Sussex, England, having been proved by Ellen Sarah Lloyd of the "Grand", Widow the Relict sole Executrix. His Personal Estate: 2,525 Pounds Sterling 2 shillings and 4 pence.
