Biography

1608 Birth and Parents

Cornelius Lloyd was born in 1608, the brother of Lloyd, Edward I (c.1620-1696), merchant and planter, who was born c.1620, perhaps in Wales. [1]

Other than his older brother Cornelius, nothing is known of his parents or any other siblings, nor of his life prior to his emigration by 1636 to the Virginia colony. [2]

Brother

Edward Lloyd, —Counsellor of the Maryland Upper House of Assembly— was a brother of Cornelius Lloyd. Cornelius was born about 1608 according to a deposition dated September 1, 1645. He was a Burgess of Upper Norfolk County, Virginia, (1642-1652) and died before December 10, 1654. His wife, Elizabeth, died before April 28, 1658, when Thomas Evans of County Kilkenny, Ireland, granted power of attorney to his kinsman John Bellgrave to collect all dues &c. in Virginia which "did belong to my late sister Mrs. Elizabeth Loyd of Elizabeth River &c." [NEHGR, vol. xlvii, p. 69] [3]

1636 Grant in Charles City County, Virginia

Cornelius Lloyd, of London, Merchant, William Tucker, Maurice Thompson, George Thompson, William Harris, Thomas Dobson, James Stone, and Jeremiah Blackman, mariner, received a grant for 8,000 acres in Charles City County on February 9, 1636/7. [Patent Book 1, p. 410] [3]

Cornelius Lloyd's links to Nicholas Hart of Boston, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, and to David Selleck of Boston, and to Thomas Evans of County Kilkenny, Ireland, are interesting. A web page about "County Kilkenny: The New English Families" says English Cromwellian officers, soldiers, and supporters received land grants in County Kilkenny beginning in the 1640s. Among the list of County Kilkenny Cromwellian landholders is Theophilus Eaton. Was this the Theophilus Eaton who became governor of New Haven Colony and married Anne Lloyd, daughter of George Lloyd, Bishop of Chester, and Anne Wilkinson? If so, since the family of Cornelius Lloyd's wife also apparently moved to County Kilkenny about this time, I wonder if Edward and Cornelius Lloyd were related to the Bishop of Chester? And, I wonder if records about Mathew Howard's ancestry might be found among the records of these families?[3]

By the way, Gary Boyd Roberts shows Anne Lloyd's descent from Joan, daughter of John Lackland, and Llywelyn Fawr ap Iorwerth on p. 321.[3]

  1. Biographical Dictionary, 2:534 Birth date given as c.1620, but this may be too late as Lloyd patented land in 1636, when he would have been only c.16 years old. Brother Cornelius born in 1608. Family tradition states that the Lloyds came from Wales; place names associated with them (Severn, Wye, and Tred Avon rivers, Hier Dier Lloyd patent, and others suggest a Welsh background); the family uses a coat of arms of Welsh origin. No definitive connection ever documented, however. Cited by Russo.
