Family Tree of Hugh Lloyd

Biography

Entered the Royal Navy in 1755, passed the Lieutenant exam. According to family lore, at age 22 was in command of warship at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. He lost a leg in that battle. However, I received copies of Hugh's petition for a pension and it turns out, Hugh did not lose his leg in the Battle of Quebec. He lost it in the Mediterranean, apparently in the aftermath of the Action of April 5, 1757.

''... served thirteen years in the Navy, during which time he has been in several engagements in ships and boats; and on the 7th of April, 1757, being then in the Mediterranean on board your Majesty’s ship Culloden, under the command of (rank?) Charles Saunders, your Majesty’s memorialist had misfortune to lose his right leg by a cannon shot in an action with four French Men of War..."'

It appears Hugh continued to serve with one leg since he didn't ask for a pension until 1767 - the year he married. His Lieutenant's exam passing certificate was dated 1760 and notes his service on the Culloden. The petition also notes 13 years of service, and because Hugh was born in 1737, his 13 years of service were obviously not prior to 1757.

Lt Hugh Lloyd was captain of the HMS Vulture in 1780, active in the colonies during the American Revolution, well after the request for a pension.

Documentation shows Hugh's children were born in the 1770s at Stoke Damerel in Devon, which is a Navy yard, so that lends some weight to the idea that he was still (or again) actively serving in those years.

Married Amelia Welch on 9 April 1767 and they had four (possibly six) children.

Married Frances Carleton on 2 Nov 1782

Hugh was buried on 10 May 1789 at St Botolph, Aldersgate, City of London, Lo
