Biography

Ernest was born in 1872 in Llandilofawr, Carmarthenshire, Wales in 1872. [1] [2]

He was married to Elizabeth Anne Reynolds in 1910. [3].

He was a civil engineer and was admitted to membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1910. [4]

His first post was as assistant engineer on the construction of Nantigro Dam, which supplied water to Birmingham, and a railway line to the dam. From 1896 to 1903 he was the chief engineer on the construction of the Craig Goch Dam in the Elan Valley in Wales. [4] When he moved back to Britain later in life, he named his house in Totnes Craig Goch.

In 1906 he was appointed by the Egyptian Government to complete work on the Isna Barrage in Upper Egypt, and in 1909, to be resident engineer on the Cairo sewage and drainage scheme. He was working in Egypt when his daughter was born in Dublin in 1912 [5], and his son James was born in Cairo in 1916 [6]

For some of this time he was the resident engineer on the first Aswan Dam (built 1898-1902) and will have been involved in the schemes to increase its height and therefore capacity between 1907 and 1912. He was still involved in 1920 and is recorded as a passenger from London to Alexandria in 1920. [7]

He moved back to England and in the 1939 England and Wales Register, they were living at Craig Goch, in Totnes, Devon. [8]

He died in 1957. [9]

Research Note

His record on Ancestry mentions two features of him that I believe may relate to another Ernest Herbert Lloyd,

  • that he was a Lieut-Colonel in the Royal Engineers, and
  • that he was awarded an OBE,

I have not been able to find any evidence that he was involved in the British Army, and it does not sound right with his involvement in Egypt for most of the first two decades of the twentieth century. Kennedy-14080 13:36, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
