Biography

Birth

Frances Lloyd,[1][2] daughter of John Lloyd (1533-1607) and Elizabeth (Pigott) Lloyd,[1][2][3] was probably born between 1557 (age 50 in 1607, last pregnancy) and 1568 (16 at marriage in 1584). Her father was at Oxford in 1554 and 1564, briefly at St Asaph's in Wales in 1559 and in London in 1566 which makes her birthplace difficult to place. John Lloyd was an advocate in the Canterbury Court of Arches, London, for 40 years.[4]

Marriage

"Doctor Yale & [blank] Lloyd daughter of Doctor Lloyd were married 3 January 1584/5" at St. Mary, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England.[5][6] The daughter of Doctor Lloyd and wife of Doctor David Yale was Frances.[1]

Presumably they lived in Lichfield, Staffordshire, for several years after their marriage since children were baptized there.[5] It's about 70 miles from Wrexham. David Yale owned an old house and a new stone house at Plas Grono, near Wrexham. Son, Thomas, eventually occupied the newer house. They also owned Erddig House, also near Wrexham, until about 1619.[7] Children were baptized at St. Oswald's in Chester between the years 1590 and 1601. Another child was baptized at Worthenbury, Flint, Wales, about 10 miles from Wrexham.[8] At David's death, he owned a house in Chester, and a house in the country called Tykerrig/Tekerricke.[9][10]

Frances's father, John, died in 1607. His will is filled with references to Frances, her husband David Yale (named executor), and the Yale children. "I John Lloyde, Doctor of Lawe ... ffourthe daye of ffebruarye One Thousand Six Hundreth and seven ... to my sonne Davyd Yale doctor of Lawe and my Daughter ffranncis his wief and their Chidren ... ... ... Hundred pounds to George Yale. John Yale., Hughe Yale, Richarde Yale, and Symon Yale the sonnes of the saide David Yale ...Twentie pounds I give ... to Samuell Yale. ...ffiftie poundes thereof to Davyd Yale sonne to the saide Davyd Yale .. and the other ffiftie pounds to Dorythie Yale, Ellyn Yale, Alice Yale, Catheryn Yale and ffrancis Yale the daughters of the said doctor Yale ... ffrancis Yale wief to the saide Davyd Yale docto of Lawe is nowe with Childe: I give to that Childe ... ffifteene poundes... to Thomas Yale sonne and heire to the saide David Yale ..." [PCC 31 Windebanck]" His will also mentions the daughter, Elizabeth, who died young. [11]

Death

Frances Yale, wife of Doctor David Yale was buried 2 March 1623 at St. Oswald's in Chester.[12][13] She shared a burial plaque (now gone) in Chester Cathedral with her parents.

"Here lies John Lloyd, Welshman, LL.D., Advocate in the Canterbury Court of Arches, London, for 40 years, together with his wife Elizabeh, most beloved daughter of Thomas Piggot of Doddershall in the County of Buckingham, Armiger, a granddaughter Elizabeth [Yale] and their daughter Frances, wife of David Yale, LL.D. Said Elizabeth, the wife, died 12 Dec. 1590. Elizabeth, the granddaughter, died 4 Oct. 1591. The aforesaid John lived 74 Years, dedicated to God and just to all. To whomsoever he could, he did good and injured no one. At length he entered the way of all flesh, 20 Feb 1607 English style [i.e. 1607/8]."[4]

"David Yale left a will proved 16 June 1626, and was buried in Chester Cathedral."[1] He named some of their children in his will and mentioned his wife, Frances, now deceased.[9][10]

Children

Although some genealogies[7] credit him with a daughter Devereux Yale, the terms of his will make it clear that she was not his daughter.[9]

Thanks, Valerie. I will add to the bios of Frances's parents. If there is a weblink to where you found the original of the Will, it would be good to have it. I have not found it on the National Archives website, though I may have missed something.
