William was born about 1731 possibly in Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His parentage in not known.

His marriage record shows that William Lochead of Fereneze Miln and Janet Armour, daughter of John Armour of Hage Glen, gave up their names for proclamation to be married on 7 Jan 1764 and 14 Jan 1762 and were married on 31 Jan 1764 in Neilston.[1] They had eight known children:

  1. Elizabeth Lochead baptized on 14 Dec 1764 in Neilston[2]
  2. Margaret Lochead born 5 Jan 1767 and baptized 6 Jan 1767 in Neilston[3][4]
  3. John Lochead born 7 Dec 1768 and baptized 11 Dec 1768 in Neilston[5][6]
  4. Janet Lochead baptized 17 Jun 1771 in Neilston[7]
  5. Robert Lochead was baptized 7 May 1775 in Neilston[8]
  6. William Lochead was baptized on 8 Feb 1778 in Neilston[9]
  7. Jane Lochead baptized 30 Jun 1782 in Neilston[10]
  8. Agnes Lochead baptized 18 Dec 1784 in Neilston[11]

The village of Neilston, where William resided with his family, has been in existence since the 12th Century and is located in the Levern Valley. It has been described as picturesque and was primarily a milling village during William's lifetime. [12][13]

The date and exact place of William's death are still a mystery as no documentation has been found but it was sometime after his last child was conceived in 1784 the location was likely in Scotland.

Research Notes

  • Based on comments, the original profile that was uploaded had William born or baptized on 24 Nov 1731 in Neilston and information was based on family notes and Ancestry trees. No supporting documentation has been discovered.
  • Suggested merges for Lochhead-112 and Locchead-42 were rejected in 26 Nov 2019 but then on 30 Jan 2021 someone merged them anyway.
  • There were several boys named William Lochead/Lochhead born in Abbey and Neilston about the same time, so which one actually married Janet Amour is questionable.
  • Removed parents William Lochhead and Elizabeth Stewart as there is nothing to document that they are the parents of the William Lochhead who married Janet Armour in Neilson and they were a result of the previous merge.
  • Date of death estimated based on baptism of last child (Dec 1784)

Hi Cliff, do you have any sources confirming that this is the William Lochhead who married Janet Armour? There were a few William Lochheads born in Neilston around the same time. I think probably Lochhead-112 and Lochhead-42 should be marked as rejected matches, but if so, we will need to clarify which one is the right husband. Thanks, Gillian
