Biography

The Swedish Colonial Society, Forefather Profile[1]

CATHARINE LOCK, daughter of Lars Carlsson and Beata Lock, born circa 1668 in Techoherassi, New Sweden (near present-day Chester, Pennsylvania), died March 1720 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, buried 22 March 1720 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. What effect her father's scandals and alcoholism may have had on Catharine we may only guess, but she had her own marital misfortunes. Catharine married circa 1692 or 1693 to JOHAN JONASSON ("John Jones"), born circa 1670 in Kingsessing, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, died after 1738 probably in or near Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, son of Jonas Nilsson and Gertrude Svensdotter. Catharine and John had five daughters, but by 1697 they were estranged, Catharine and her daughters living in the household of John Bowles of Greenwich Township in New Jersey, where Catharine lived as John Bowles' "housekeeper" (obviously a euphemism for adultery or concubinage -- living as if they were man and wife even though she was still married to someone else). Of their living arrangement, Craig wrote, "They moved in 1698 to Repaupo Creek in Gloucester County where, despite court harassment, the arrangement continued (The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware, page 43), the "harassment" being due to their cohabitation as if they were married was illegal. As for her husband John, it was probably due to John's failure as a husband and father that his own father Jonas cut him out of his will. The late Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig speculated that John Jones may have been "a mariner for he seems to be absent most of the time."

Craig provided this summary of John Jonasson's life in his book The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware (1993), page 39, which says:

  1. 26. John Jonasson [Jones] (residence unknown: John Jonasson (John Jones) was cut off in his father's will with a bequest of only one shilling. He was married to Catharine Lock, daughter of Lars Carlsson Lock and Beata Lom (see #68-69). By 1697, Catharine was "housekeeper" for John Bowles (see #36) and remained in this capacity until Bowles' death twenty years later. Bowles left his entire estate to Catharine and her five daughters, all of whom were born after the 1693 census was taken. Catharine, described as "Carin Jones or Lock," was buried in Gloucester County 22 March 1720. Her estranged husband, John Jones, was still living in 1728 [sic - 1738] when he was named co-executor of his brother Andrew's will.

Catharine's subsequent daughters as named in the will of John Bowles: Beata, Elisabeth, Anna, Maria, Rebecca. NJA, 23:47. Beata Jones married Anders Petersson at the Raccoon church (Swedesboro), 16 Nov. 1720. RPN, 306. Her mother's burial is reported in RPN, 326. The 1697 census, as translated, described Catharine as the "daughter" of John Jones and as John Bowles' "wife," PMHB, 2:226, but she is described as "housekeeper" in John Bowles' will.

The place of birth of Catharine's and John's daughters is unknown. It could have been Kingsessing where John was born and raised, or perhaps Techoherassi where Catharine was born, or even some other place.

4. REBECCA JONES, married James Steelman Jr., brother of Hans Steelman.

4. REBECCA JONES, daughter of John and Catharine Jones. After her parents separated, Rebecca was raised with her four older sisters in the household of John Bowles of Kingsessing, Pennsylvania. Rebecca's husband was JAMES STEELMAN JR., born circa 1701 in Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, New Jersey, died 1784 in Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, New Jersey, son of James and Susannah Steelman. They had two sons and five daughters. The late Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig, in his article, "The Toy and King Families of Senamensing, New Jersey," published posthumously in Swedish Colonial News, Vol. 4, No. 2 (Summer 2010), page 15, offers the following information on James and his family: "5. James Steelman, Jr., born c. 1701, married Rebecca Jones, sister of Hans Steelman's wife Elsa, they had sons James and John and five daughters -- Susannah, Catherine, Rebecca, Mary Ann and Sarah. He died at Great Egg Harbor in 1784."

-- SUSANNAH STEELMAN, born in Great Egg Harbor Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.
