Biography

John Lock was born in 1712 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. He died 15 Aug 1791 in Swedesboro, Gloucester, New Jersey, USA.

John Lock, "son of John Lock and Cathrine, b. Hoffman, dec'd, b. 10 Aug 1724" was married twice and the father of five children.

With his first wife, Rebecca Henricson, he had a son

  1. Peter Lock m. Regina Van Neaman

His second wife was "Sara, daughter of Garret Van Neaman and Mary, b. Lock, dec'd." Children

  1. John m. Martha Tomlin
  2. Cathrine
  3. David
  4. Garret

The following was recorded in Swedesboro church records:

"Lock, John, son of John Lock and Cathrine, b. Hoffman, dec'd., b. 10 Aug 1724. Sara, h.w., b. about year 1734, daughter of Garret Van Neaman and Mary, b. Lock, dec'd. Their children: John, husband of Martha Tomlin; Cathrine, b. 13 June 1762; David, b. 15 Sept. 1768; Garret, b. Dec. 1, 1771. With his first wife, Rebecca Henricson: Peter Lock, husband of Regina, b. Van Neaman."[1]

Death and Legacy

The abstract of his will names his wife Sarah, his three sons, and daughter Cathrine. The inventory was dated 10 June and it was proved on 15 August 1791.[2]

Research Notes

1) There is a clear duplicate for this profile, Lock-2034, except that he did not have a daughter Rebecca.

The John Lock who died in 1791 left a will naming three sons and only one daughter, Catharine. If he had a daughter Rebecca, it would be unusual not to name her in the will.

Is there evidence that that Rebecca's parents were named John and Sarah (Vanaman) Lock? There is a record for Rebecca Lock, daughter of Andrew Lock' born say 1778 (estimated because she came of legal age to choose her own guardian--which was usually about 14--in 1792). This is the exact age for the Rebecca on this profile. See https://archive.org/stream/recordsoftrinity00mino#page/35/mode/1up

2) One profile stated, "Died 1791 in Greenwich Township, Gloucester, New Jersey, United States."

3) Profiles Lock-2034 and Lock-855 were merged 1 Aug 2021.

4) One profiled gave birth date of 10 Aug 1724, however that is doubtful since father died in 1720[3].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Please see Research Note 1 regarding alleged daughter Rebecca. Her profile needs some additional research and possible changes! There may be at least one different parent for her.

Coby, do you have any source for Rebecca Lock's parents? It seems she is incorrectly attached to this John Lock.

Thanks Richard. I changed the DOB but realized there is a discrepancy between Peter Craig's article (in which he says John Lock Sr died in 1720) and the Records of Trinity Episcopal, which say John Lock son of John Lock and Catharine Hoffman was b. 1724. I wonder if I'm missing a generation. I'll double check the Swedish church records.

Heather, In bio, the birth year is 1724. I wonder how birth year shows as 1712 at top.

Also, I believe this is a duplicate of Lock-2356 -- although your biography shows quite a lot more research. Lock-855 seems also related, although Van Neaman is rendered Vanaman there, perhaps phonicaly misspelled.
