Research Notes

Susan Fitzmaurice 7th great-granddaughter:

I am not convinced of his baptism or parents. The parents in the baptism do not match the parent's names in the record, but again Leonard and Dorothy are generally accepted as true without any source. (Note: Leonard and Dorothy Locke removed as parents due to absence of sourcing.)

Sara V Mosher : It appears Robert Locke and Robert Johnston have been mixed together. Can't find a source for Robert Locke's marriage to Elizabeth Smiley.

Robert Lock married Elizabeth Smiley in 1698 at London, England. They had a son, John. (Source?)

Elizabeth and Robert seem to have parted ways as both remarried, Elizabeth to Robert Johnston in 1732.[2]

The following information comes from The Snipes Kin by Dr. James Johnston Snipes that is held by the NSDAR Library. Dr. Snipes was an avid genealogist from as early as 1916 until his death in 1951.[3]

Robert Johnston was born in Northern Ireland in 1698 and married there Elizabeth Smiley. In 1735 Robert Johnston, with his wife and one year old son, John came to America and settled in Bucks Co., Pa. About 1750 Robert moved, with his family to Rowan Co., N.C., about 15 mi. northwest of Salisbury. Robert Johnston is buried in the church yard of Third Creek Pres. Church located not far from Cleveland, N.C. His tombstone reads "Robert Johnston who departed life 10/22/1778, aged 80 years." There is also a copy of his will.

A John Washington Johnston, who descends from Robert, had a son William Locke Johnston, so there may be a connection to the Locke family of Rowan Co. There are references to John Washington and his sons William Locke and Caleb Johnston in the records of the "Third Creek Church."[3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

The information listed has a lot of problems. I see no proof that this Robert died in North Carolina at age 99 in the 1700's.... I can confirm he is not the son of my ancestor Leonard Lock as the Rowan Locke's and the Bladen Lock's have DNA tested and we do not match.

I also find a Robert Locke listed in the Virginia colonial records. https://archive.org/details/colonialrecordso00virg/page/52/mode/2up

Where is the proof that the son John is in fact the son of this Robert Locke? There are so many holes in the information on this man. I have fought with people over the years who still claim he is the son of Leonard even though this is proven false. Where did they get the info on him? Why can no one show a source?

I have found some more information on Robert Lock.

In 1656, Robert Lock sailed from Gravesend to New England (America) on the 30th May on the Ship Speedwell. If you look up the ship 'Speedwell'. Its well documented and was also used alongside the Mayflower.

We have a record of the passenger list with Robert being the only Lock on board. The other passengers it gives their age, but Robert it doesn't.

I am looking for more information on Robert by trying to track down the Sale Record for the Speedwell. Captain John Thomas Chappell sold the Speedwell in shortly after the Virginia Voyage in 1635. Its last known UK location before Gravesend was Southampton.

I suspect if we can find the sale record, we may be able to find more information on Robert.

In my own personal records. I have a record of a Marriage between Robert Lock and Suzanna Baldwin dated 1674 in Lingfield Surrey. This is the earliest record I can 100% confirm at this stage. There are a number of Roberts and John's spanning 3 generations all around this time. Being that names from father to son were important. It would link them in this regard. But more information is needed to connect them for sure. Tho It appears to be the most likely connection to Captain Robert Lock currently available.

While doing my research, I found that around this time, there was a popular merchant canal that ran from gravesend in Kent through Otford and down into Surrey. This could be a strong link between gravesend and with the Lock family in Surrey.

The records of the ships log show that the voyage from gravesend was due to religious persecution of the Quakers. It could mean that the family were split on religions ideology during the English civil war, dividing them. Robert sailing to New England with the Quakers and the remaining family settling inland in Surrey. But this is still some speculation.

I can confirm 1000% that Robert was NOT the son of Leonard Lock and his wife Dorothy. I am a direct descendant of Leonard and he had no son named Robert and only had ONE son named Thomas Lock.

I have traced my family line with all records. Also Y-DNA matched with an ancestor in the states who traced his family line to a John Locke who's father is Robert Lock.

I have 3 Robert Locke's in my family line all from Surrey all around the same time and have all the baptism records for them.

I'd love to see if we can make a link here

Disconnected parents. Unlikely Robert Locke was a son of Leonard Locke https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Locke-1217. Leonard was born in Somerset and died in Pennsylvania. He doesn't mention a son Robert in his will.
