Notes

Note N00042He was called "Honest John the Miller". (from A History and Genealogyof Captain John Locke...)
Another pioneer Green Hill district family was the Lockes. John Locke, the first of the family to come to Barrington, was the grandson of William Locke, one of the "Rye Men" who purchased much of range 8, in the Two Mile Streak from the Lamprey Iron Works proprietors. John Locke first set up a saw mill at Locke's Falls, and because Green Hill was most exposed to the Indian menace, Elisha Locke [his brother?] built a garrison house to protect the neighborhood. The Locke Garrison was a one story building with rifle ports holes under the eaves, which were reached by ladder-like stairs. It is the only one of the five garrison houses which is still standing today [1966]. With the subsequentaddition of a second story and an ell, it is the first house on the left, going from East Barrington to Gonic on Route 125, now occupied bythe Moffett family. (p. 33, A History of Barrington, NH)
John Locke known as "Honest John the Miller", set up a saw mill and grist mill at Locke's Falls. The machinery for these mills had to be drawn from Newmarket through the wilderness by ox team to the mill site. After Miller John, the Locke family carried on the mils for many years. Shortly before the Civil War, the Lockes leased the property to theTrickery Brothers, who were John, Charles and probably Samuel. (p. 80, A History of Barrington, NH)
Locke's Mill is near where Rout 202 crosses the Isinglass River today[1966], There is a fall there in the river which has been used for water power since the earliest days of the town. (p. 81, A History of Barrington, NH)
Burial plot is a family plot located near the Isinglass River at the end of a dirt road which is off Tolend Road. Graveyard G-1-4 on map included with the Graveyards of Barrington, NH.
