Mary Lockhart was born on 10 Feb 1819, baptized on 13 Feb 1819 at Paisley, Renfrewshire. She was named after her paternal grandmother, Mary Craig, following the traditional naming pattern, "...second daughter after father's mother...."
Her parents emigrated to Canada about 1830-31. Her father was listed in the 1831 census at the village of St. Philippe, near Montréal with six children, who were unnamed. Mary’s father died at Montréal in 1833; her mother remarried to a man named Cloyde or Cloyd, and they moved with their various children to central New York, about 1836.
Did Mary stay behind in the UK, when her parents migrated? Or did she go with them to Canada, and later return to the UK? Unknown. In any case, Mary Lockhart married George Dow at Glasgow in 1846. Soon after their marriage the couple moved to Newfoundland, for unknown reasons. At least two children were born in Newfoundland.
About 1850 they moved to rejoin Mary's family. The 1850 U.S. census at Troy, New York then showed George and Mary Dow, living with Mary's mother and step-father. With them also were two Dow children born in Newfoundland and a third child born in New York.
Following the death of her step-father, John Cloyd(e), Mary, her husband, children, mother, and several siblings all moved to Chicago, where they were shown in the 1860 U.S. census. Why did they move? What did they do at Chicago? Unknown. Maybe it had to do with George Dow's employment.
Mary died at Chicago, on 4 June 1893, age 74. The death certificate showed her name as "Mary Lockhart Dow", a housewife. She was buried at Mount Olive cemetery.
