Data provided by descendant Nancy Page indicates that Byrd Lockhart Sr. (the father of the Texas Lockharts) died in 1814 in Illinois. He owned 1900 acres on Hughes River in VA and land in Wood County, VA in the 1780s according to an 1804 deed. He is listed on the Hampshire County, VA tax lists of 1782 and 1790. A "corner" of land to Byrd Lockhart is mentioned in a Harrison County, WV deed book.

In 1793 he lived in the garrison established by Isaac Williams which is today Williamston, Wood County, WV on the Ohio River. He is listed on the Kanawha County, Va tax roll of 1810. He took the family to Illinois before 1812 and died after rescuing a daughter from the "savages" at Fort Russell, Madison County, IL. [1]

Death

I have found two dates, 1813 and 1814. Additional research is needed.

Records indicate that Byrd (Bird) Lockhart Sr "died after rescuing a daughter from the "savages" at Fort Russell, Madison County, Illinois".[6]

Death: quote from History of Bond & Montgomery County
"Robert Briggs' maternal grandfather, living in the Fort at Edwardsville, rescued a daughter from the savages, and while bearing her home to the fort, began bleeding at the nose, and died from loss of blood."

(The Robert Briggs referred to is the son of Robert Briggs and Mary {Polly} Lockhart). This means the g father referred to is Byrd Lockhart, and yes, he did die in Madison Co. IL, as referred to above.[7]

Will and Probate

The following record indicates that the Lockharts were children of Bird and Sarah Lockhart Sr., once of MadisonCo, IL (From Land Record Bk. W, pp. 24-25)

Lockhart-1265 and Lockhart-1439 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Spouses names are different...Still working on this..made a recent trip to TX and dug up ton's of info on son Byrd/Bird...one source stated that Byrd Sr was the brother of James Lockhart (Rachel Totten) connection which he has been confused as their son also named Bird/Byrd...I probably won't be able to get the info up that I found until this summer but in the meantime, we can keep all three spouses that are connected until we can document the correct name for Sarah. THANKS! Nae x
