After some years Moncton with a career as a sailor, in 1885 he settled in Port Townsend, Washington, traveling there by steamer. En route, the steamer broke down and drifted helplessly for two weeks. Milledge, a skilled mechanic, made and fitted a set of wooden gears that enabled the ship to proceed, “thereby averting certain disaster on the rugged coast of Vancouver Island” (obituary). In 1888, he married Mary J. Roper in Port Townsend. He became an American patriot, and a poem of his celebrating the US war effort (WWI) survives. A son fought in the war. From his obituary, “He was married in Port Townsend and five children were born. Four survive: Grace, now Mrs. J. J. Smith, Silas, married and living here, Jay who is in the Navy and stationed in Florida, and Otis who resides in Seattle, Washington. ”Wife: Mary J. Roper. Marriage: 1888

The source book says Children: Silas, Jay, Otis, Mary Smith and possibly Grace and George. This was written in the pre-internet days and without contacting living Descendants. Now that contact has been made, we know that Mary is actually Grace, George doesn't exist and there was a Maude that died young.
