Charlotte was born in 1828. She was the daughter of John Lockhart and Sophia Scott (and the granddaughter of Sir Walter Scott).
She married James Robert Hope, son of General Hon. Sir Alexander Hope and Georgiana Brown, on 19 August 1847. He adopted the name "Hope-Scott" upon their marriage to ensure Abbotsford estate in Roxburghshire remained in the hands of a Scott. They had two children, a son who died in infancy, and a daughter, Mary Monica Hope Scott.
She passed away in 1858. Her husband remarried 3 years later and had more children, but Abbotsford passed to her daughter and her husband.
