Joseph Lockwood, son of Ephraim and Mercy (St. John) Lockwood, was born 1 April, 1680 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut.[1][2]
Joseph married Mary Weed, daughter of John and Mary Weed of Stamford on 14 August 1707.
Mary is listed in the St. John Genealogy as "Mary Wood, who d. June 2, 1736; dau. of John Wood."[3]
This spelling also appears in the Descendants of Robert Lockwood, and appears to trace back at least as far as the record of her marriage as rendered in the book Ancient Historical Records of Norwalk, published in 1865.[4]
However, Mary Lockwood was named as a daughter, along with her Weed siblings, by Mary, widow of Josiah Firman, late of Stamford, in her last will executed 20 March 1713/14,[5]
and Edith Wicks' miniature abstract of a 1754 Stamford deed asserts that it shows Joseph Lockwood Jr. to be a grandson of John Weed.[6]
Joseph died 23 Nov, 1760.[7] His gravestone has the inscription: "who departed this life Nov23, 1780, in ye 81st year of his life".[2]
His will is dated 16 April 1758 and proved on 1 December 1760 in Fairfield.[8]
On 29 December 1760, Ruth Hoyt, Mary Benedict, and Elizabeth Hoyt, the daughters of joseph Lockwood (and their husbands) signed an agreement saying they received their portion of the moveable estate in full from their father's estate.[9]
On 17 December 1760, his widow, Hannah signed at the receipt for money from his estate and also from an agreement before she had married him.[10]
