He was a man of irreproachable character, and of no mean ability. Five years afterward he was elected mayor of the city."

Matthew Clarkson, son of Rev. David Clarkson, was born in England, died in New York City, July 20, 1702. He was a non- conformist, as his father had been, and with his half-brother, Charles Lodwick, came to New York about 1685. The latter was a prosperous merchant here, and became mayor of the city.[1]
