The 1890 Fed. census says that Richard was born about 1876 in Nebraska, although most other censuses (1890 census), suggest that he was born in 1878.
The 1898 census shows that his Hocąk name was Shunk-chunk-cho-ne-kaw, which is for Šųkcąkconįka, "Little Blue/Green Wolf," from šųkcąk, "wolf"; co, "a color spanning the spectrum from blue through green; nįk, "little"; and -ka, a definite article suffix used for proper names. Alternatively, conį means, "first", so that the name would also mean, "First Wolf".
