Biography

William settled in the area of Virginia which became Rockbridge County. Both William Logan and David Logan were Charter Members of the Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church. Three of William's children are shown on the baptism record there: John, in 1741, Mary in 1744 and Ann in 1746.

William later moved to the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church where John Logan, one of David’s brothers also attended.

Research Notes

  • A 14 Jul 1705 birth date and 29 Jul 1705 christening date is attributed to William Logan in Ayr, Scotland, with John Logan and Agnes Richmont listed as parents.[1] However, yDNA of living male descendants of David and John, immigrants, has proven that they did not share the same parents. This baptism record could indicate a son who was named William who possibly died young, or who did not settle in Orange County. The source of this is none other than the Kentucky historian, Thomas Marshall Green. See next paragraph.
  • William Logan was initially believed to be brother of David Logan who married Jane McKinley and emigrated to Pennsylvania, and thence to Augusta County, Virginia. David and Jane were parents of Gen. Benjamin McKinley Logan of Kentucky. DNA studies of descendants of both these progenitors has show there is a distant relationship.
  • William's Find a Grave memorial registers a different date of birth ("around 1709"). It also opts for citing Elizabeth Crosswick as his spouse, without documentation. This is largely due to the non-burial fictional Findagrave memorial that has conflated two men of the same approximate age with the same name of William 'Clinch' Logan Find A Grave: Memorial #40959922 which is linked to Elizabeth Croswick Find A Grave: Memorial #157241160

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Logan-6545 and Logan-658 appear to represent the same person because: despite a small difference in date of birth, these profiles otherwise contain the same other information.

Northern Ireland was established in 1929. There was no United Kingdom in 1700s.

Logan DNA project has proven this William is not a brother to David and James. No evidence that his wife was Hatcher or Crosswick.
