Biography
John W. Lohmar was born in April 1825 in Germany. [1] His Findagrave memorial indicates that he was born in Wokuhl, Prussia. Wokuhl is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in eastern Germany.
He married Anna Catherine Kraus,[2] probably in Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1854.[1] The 1900 U.S. Census indicates that he had been married 51 years; since he was a widower, this probably means his marriage was 51 years prior to 1900, or about 1849.
Their children included:
- Julia (Lohmar) Temme, born in Germany on 27 October 1850.[3]
- Rosa (Lohmar) Utley, born in Iowa in February 1858.[1]
- Frederick W. Lohmar, born in Iowa in June 1860.[4]
The 1880 U.S. Census recorded him as Wm. Lohmar, age 55, in Keokuk, Iowa. By occupation he was a moulder. Others in the household were his wife Katrina Lohmar, age 63, and unmarried children Rosa Lohmar, age 22, and Wm. F. Lohmar, age 19, also a moulder. Wm. and Katrina were born in Prussia to parents born in Prussia, and Rosa and Wm. F. were born in Iowa to parents born in Prussia.[5]
In 1900, the U.S. Census recorded John W. Lohmar, a widower, age 75, in Keokuk, Iowa, in the home of his son-in-law James D. Utley, 55, and James's wife (this man's daughter) Rosa Utley, age 42, and with their daughter Beulah Utley, age 10.[1]
John W. Lohmar died on 8 January 1904 and is reportedly buried in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa. The Findagrave memorial has no gravestone image, but it states as "gravesite details" that he was born in Wokuhl, K.R. Prussia as Johann Wilhelm Lohmar.[6] K.R. Prussia probably is Königreich Preußen, the kingdom of Prussia.
Research Notes
The given names of this man and his wife are unlikely to have been John and Catherine (more likely Johann and Catharina); these are the names found in the U.S. records. Smith-62120 20:01, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
