Early Years

Jacob Lollback Senr. has German Roots.
Jacob Lollback Senr. has roots in the region now known as Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Jacob Lellbach was born at sea on board the Helene which departed Hamburgh on 17 October 1852 and arrived in Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales about 18 March 1853. The incoming passenger list shows he was 9 months old, born on the voyage, RC (Roman Catholic) and a son of Georg Lellbach (41, vinedresser) and his wife Magdalena (41) born Schliessmann.[1][2]

His exact date of birth is uncertain. His age on arrival (9 months in March 1853) suggests he was born in June or July 1852. However, there is a baptism record for a Jacob Leilbach [sic], son of George and Lena Leilbach which shows he was born on 13 January 1853. This record (actually a transcript of an early church record) may be wrong or be for a different person.[3]

His parents were probably Johann Georg Löllbach (also written Lellbach in at least some original German records)[4] and Magdalena Schliessmann[5] from Käfertal, near Mannheim, now in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Spelling of Family Name
In New South Wales, Jacob's family name was usually spelt Lollbach or more commonly Lollback. However, his father's baptism record shows "Lellbach" and the family's surname is also spelt "Lellbach" on the incoming passenger list for the Helena. Many researchers show Löllbach. In was commonly mispelt in New South Wales where it has also been recorded or transcribed as Leilbach and Lallback.

Baptism
Jacob was probably the "Jacob Leilbach" baptised at Yulgilbar on 17 November 1856.[3] Yulgibar, now Yulgilbar Station, is located in north eastern New South Wales, near Baryulgil.

His parents settled in Copmanhurst, Clarence River in northern New South Wales.

Marriage

Jacob Lollback married Hannah Mary (Schipp) Lollback (1860-1936) on 17 Jan 1878, probably in or near Grafton where their marriage was registered but possibly in Maclean as shown on his death certificate.[6] The couple had a large family, at least fourteen children.

They settled at Copmanhurst where they owned a wine shop. In those days, Copmanhurst was virgin scrub inhabited by First Nations people. According to a newspaper article published in 1943, "the early settlers were practically isolated from Grafton, and often carried on in fear of their lives." The couple improved the land beyond recognition. Later, they donated a half an acre to the Catholic Church and a church was erected on that site.[7] Later still, they took up farming, selecting land on Woodford Island, at Brushgrove, and on this property good financial progress was made. After five years there, they bought property on Palmer's Island.[8]

Death

Jacob died on 23 October 1915 at Palmers Island in New South Wales and was buried in Maclean Cemetery[9][10]

PERSONAL. The death of Mr. Jacob Lollback, senr., of Palmer's Channel, occurred at his residence on Saturday night. Deceased, who was 62 years of age, and a native of Copmanhurst) had resided on the Lower Clarence for up wards of 30 years. A widow, eight sons and six daughters, all residents on the Lower Clarence, survive him. The funeral at Maclean yesterday, was largely attended, the remains being interred in the R.C. cemetery, the Rev. Archpriest Walsh conducting the burial service.

His death certificate shows Jacob Lollback , born at sea and 63 years in New South Wales.[11]

Research Notes

1. Marriage place: Jacob's Death Certificate shows the couple were married in Maclean but his wife's Death Certificate shows Grafton.
