Biography

Mary Turner Lombe was born 3 October 1732, in London, England, the daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Lombe, Alderman, and Sherriff of London 1727 and his wife, Elizabeth Turner.[1],[2]

Her father died 8 January 1739 bequeathing a fortune of 120,000 pounds equally to his widow and his two daughters, Mary and her elder sister Hannah, who married Sir Robert Clifton, 5th Baronet.[3]

Mary Turner Lombe married James Maitland, at that time styled as Viscount Maitland, later 7th Earl of Lauderdale, son of Sir Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy, on 24 April 1749 at Merton, county Surrey.[2]

Mary and James had the following children:[4]

  1. Lady Hannah Maitland b. 24 Oct 1750, d. 16 Sep 1768
  2. Lady Elizabeth Maitland b. 18 Dec 1751
  3. Valdave Charles Lauder Maitland, styled Viscount Maitland, born 14 December 1752, died an infant 5 September 1754 at Halton;[2]
  4. Lady Mary Julian Maitland b. 26 Jul 1754, d. 2 Feb 1795
  5. James Maitland, born 26 January 1759, styled Viscount Maitland, and succeeded his father as 8th Earl of Lauderdale 1789, died 15 September 1839;[2]
  6. Lt.-Gen. Sir Thomas Maitland b. 10 Mar 1760, d. 1824
  7. John Maitland b. 3 Oct 1761, d. 8 Oct 1768
  8. Lady Hannah Charlotte Maitland b. 5 Nov 1762, d. 8 May 1804
  9. General Hon. William Mordaunt Maitland b. 12 Aug 1764, d. 24 Jun 1841
  10. Lady Jane Maitland b. 4 Jun 1769, d. 1 Jun 1833
  11. Lady Isabel Anne Maitland b. 4 Jun 1772, d. 4 Sep 1858

When her husband succeeded as 7th Earl of Lauderdale in 1744, she assumed the title Countess of Lauderdale, and died 20 July 1789 at Halton.[2]

Research Notes

The Complete Peerage, states that she was in her 15th year when she married in 1749 and aged 55 when she died in 1789, which would place her birth in about 1734. Need to check whether the birth in 1732, was for her or perhaps an elder sister with the same name who died young?

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 do not represent the same person because: I appreciate the explanation you have given but my research partner and myself are still looking things over. Lombe-8 seems to have several DNA matches that are missing on Lombe-2

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 appear to represent the same person because: Mary Turner Lombe married James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale, for which there is ample sources that indicate this is correct. It is inconceivable that a woman with the exact same name would be married to James Lauderdale, and in any case it is four months since this proposed merge was rejected for the third time and no sources have been provided at all to show that such a marriage took place. Nor any sources provided to show she was the mother of any of the Lauderdale children.

As WikiTree forbids the editing of a profile to represent a different person, the only option is to remove Lombe-8 as the wife of James Lauderdale and removing her as the mother of the Lauderdale children, and merging Lombe-8 with Lombe-2. If the correct name of the wife of James Lauderdale is identified with reliable sources, then that profile can be created.

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 do not represent the same person because: I have been researching, unlike your statement. These are not the same person. Different dates of birth and death, different spouses, different children. Different people.

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 appear to represent the same person because: Mary Turner Lombe, clearly married James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale, and not James Maitland the emigrant. There are sources on Lombe-2 that indicate this is correct, and no sources at all on Lombe-8. This merge was rejected two months ago and no further research has taken place in that time. These profiles must be merged and Lombe-8 removed as wife of James Maitland the Emigrant, and mother of his children. Thank you

I sent you and email through WikiTree a few days ago, about this merge request. These ladies are not the same person, I fear I have the wrong name on Lombe-8. I know their husbands are not the same person. Please contact me.

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 do not represent the same person because: Needs more research!

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 appear to represent the same person because: There is absolutely no reliable source that confirms Mary Turner Lombe is the wife of James Lauderdale the emigrant, and sources that do confirm she is the wife of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale. Unless reliable sources are presented to show the opposite, then the profile of Lombe-8 must be removed as the wife of James Lauderdale, and that profile merged with Lombe-2. Please don't reject this merge proposal unless there is evidence.

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 do not represent the same person because: I am sorry but my DNA does not align with Lombe-2 and it does with Lombe-8. Cannot merge at this time.

Lombe-8 and Lombe-2 appear to represent the same person because: Mary Turner Lombe, definitely married James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale, (see sources on the profile of Lombe-2) and not James Maitland/Lauderdale the emigrant. Please disconnect Lombe-8 from her current husband and merge these two duplicated profiles. Thank you

Lombe-4 and Lombe-2 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, husband, children.

Theres a lot of records, but you have to read the records of Mary Turner Lombes children too. There are a lot of clues and information. The Profile as it is, is excellent and it puts more experienced researchers to shame, especially surrounding profiles managed by those more experienced. just my opinion. Eric
