Martha Lum or Lume was born 7 Jan 1580/1 in West Riding, Yorkshire, England. She died before 17 Aug 1635 in Sowerby, Halifax, Yorkshire, England.
Martha Lume (umlaut over the vowel in her surname) was married on 21 May 1611 at St John Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire, England to Edmund Wood of Shelf. [1][2](1578-1663).[2]
Edmund was from Oram, Yorkshire, and he was married and his children baptized in Halifax, Yorkshire, where he was church warden 1604-5. He sailed for America 23 May 1635 on the James, and arrived in Boston 17 Aug 1635, a widower with five children. He was an original settler of Springfield, MA, in 1636, Wethersfield in 1637, Stamford in 1641, and was a proprietor of Hempstead, Long Island, in 1647.
The Lum family originated in Sowerby, Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, at a place known as "Lumb" meaning, in Yorkshire dialect of West Riding, a small wood or grove. The name is variously spelled Lome, Lum, Lombe, Loom, etc. The family we trace is identified in the 1536 Tithe Rental of Halifax Parish as "The Heirs of John Lome near Lighthaselle in Sowerby." Lighthazles is in the south of Sowerby near Soyland.[4]
William Lome (bap.18 Dec 1552-1592) m.7 Nov 1580 Agnes Bairstow (bap.5 Feb 1557/8) daughter of Richard Bayrstow of Shibden. William lived in Lighthazles, Sowerby, made his will 2 May 1591, and it was proved 16 Nov 1592.
