Biography

Martha Lum or Lume was born 7 Jan 1580/1 in West Riding, Yorkshire, England. She died before 17 Aug 1635 in Sowerby, Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

Martha Lume (umlaut over the vowel in her surname) was married on 21 May 1611 at St John Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire, England to Edmund Wood of Shelf. [1][2](1578-1663).[2]

Edmund was from Oram, Yorkshire, and he was married and his children baptized in Halifax, Yorkshire, where he was church warden 1604-5. He sailed for America 23 May 1635 on the James, and arrived in Boston 17 Aug 1635, a widower with five children. He was an original settler of Springfield, MA, in 1636, Wethersfield in 1637, Stamford in 1641, and was a proprietor of Hempstead, Long Island, in 1647.

Please consider making LNAB Lum for continuity.
West Riding is one of three subdivisions of Yorkshire. Familysearch.org is more specific, recording that she was baptized at Halifax 8 Jan 1581, citing "The Parish Registers of Halifax, co. York", transcribed by E. W. Crossley v. 37 p. 268 (FHLC film 528,766). (Digitized film 7718092 image 199): Martha fil. Mathew Lom̄e de Sourbie

Is there a source for given name Margaret. All sources including her marriage in the original church book (that I just added to these profiles) call her Martha. Torrey calls her Martha. FAG calls her Martha

Great Migration mentions Edmund six times but she is not mentioned with him (that I can see anyways).

Thanks, Carole--the way to get that "aka" on the board is to put alternate surname spellings in the "Other Last Names" field in the "Edit" screen. With names before about 1850, it is important to note ALL variations of a name found in records, to facilitate searches in the Wiki database.

I like the way you handled the surname question by using Lome aka Lum. I have her husband under Edmund Wood but I'd like to merge him with yours. We still have the same problem down the road as some people use Woods ect. later on too that belong to this line but it could be handled in the same way Woods aka Wood Wode, Atwood, Woodruff. My source is page 169 Ebenezer SHATTUCK and Lucy WOODS

page 169 Lemuel Shattuck, Memorials of the Decendants of William Shattuck, the Progenitor of the families of America that have borne his name (Boston, Dutton and Wentworth, 1855 I have tired to get a merge before but someone complained because some people use Woods. If we followed you example of wording, we should have that covered.

Lum-14 and Lome-2 appear to represent the same person because: edited the data for Lum (DOD & POD) to match info in her bio.
It should be Lome merged into Lum
