Vaclav and Barbara Lomenda information shown in Esterhazy and Area history book 1903-1998.
Vaclav Lomenda (born Sept 19, 1845-died December 17, 1923) was married in 1868 to Barbara Kozak (January 22, 1852-April 6, 1937).
They were both born of Czech parents in Czechoslovakia and later moved to Nova Silki, White Russia, now known as Ukraine. Many others moved as well because the government offered land and whatever they needed, but it wasn't until they were established that they found out that if the farmer-owner died, everything would revert back to the government.
That was when they decided to come to Canada where they could buy land for $10.00, so the voyage took place in 1890 and their first stop was Winnipeg in the fall of that year. They stayed in Winnipeg until April of 1891. Vaclav and Barbara's two daughters Marianna and Albina stayed there and worked. The three sons accompanied their parents to Whitewood and then went north 25 miles and settled on SW 14-19-2 W2. Their oldest son Frank settled on NW 14-19-2 W2. Joseph and Louis helped their parents to build a log house with a sod roof, to clear land etc. Any work on the land was done with oxen as well as trips to the nearest town, Whitewood which was a three day trip. All they bought were the basic supplies. Life was easier when they were able to purchase horses. Barbara was a qualified mid-wife and delivered many babies in the district.
Joseph was married in 1903 and it was then that Louis helped his dad build a second log house with a lumber roof and shingles. They lived in the house until Louis was married in 1907, at which time Louis built them a smaller home.
