Jean-Baptiste was born on 14 Jan 1814 in Baie-du-Febvre in what is now Quebec.
Jean-Baptiste was baptized the following day in Baie-du-Febvre. In attendance were his mother's father Louis Dionne, and Angélique Poirier, the wife of Gabriel Benoit.
"Josette Monagre [is] now married to John Baptiste Benway." (Waggoner, 45a)
"Lewis Monagre alias Lewis From has four children Peter Monagre, about the age of 19 or 20, Josette Monagre now married to John Baptiste Benway, Jane Monagre about fourteen years old and Charles Monagre about the age of eleven years old. ... Jean-Baptiste, on account of his wife Josette's standing as half Winnebago, received a portion of the $100,000 paid to the Winnebago for land cessions in the treaty of 1837. Alexander Grignon, as a character reference, testified, "That the said john B. Beneway is trustworthy and in every respect capable of taking charge of the award to his said wife. His character stands fair; he is temperate and prudent and well calculated to discharge the duties of a Trustee and an affectionate and careful husband." (Waggoner, 48a-b)
He died on 5 Oct 1896 in Sherburn, Martin County, Minnesota.
