Biography

Born 1731

Died 1809

Henry married Abt 1767 in Augusta Co, VA (in the area which is presently Wythe Co, VA) to Ann Watson (b. 1748 in Augusta Co, VA Wythe Co, VA (in the are which is presently Wythe Co, VA) , d. Bef 1820 in Russell Co, VA). She was a daughter of Benjamin Watson and Agnes_____. In 1783 Henry and family lived in Shenandoah Co, VA That he sold his Augusta properties by 1771 is shown in the records. He is known to have been in Montgomery County during the Rev. War. He is also there in the tax lists of the 1780s. He appears in Wythe after that county split off from Montgomery about 1790. Finally he moved to Russell County (along with son Joseph and son-in-law Nicholas Honaker) in about 1800. There is substantial indirect evidence supporting that Henry was the father of Joseph as well as Benjamin and Ann who married Nicholas Honaker. The proofs for his being the father of Joseph is primarily based on their proximity in both Wythe and Russell VA as well as how these Longs named their children over three generations. That Henry was the father of Benjamin is proved by a reference in a Wythe lawsuit about 1840 wherein it is stated that Henry and his son were on a survey team in Wythe about 1795. That Henry was the father of Andrew is proven in a Russell VA deed of 1809. There is a probability that Henry and Ann had several other children. One is Henry who is found in the 1820 census in Russell. If the naming pattern of the Longs was followed, Henry should have been the fourth son born about 1783. There is, however, no evidence of such a son in Henry's household in the tax lists of Wythe and Russell. That his parents were Joseph and Anna Long of Augusta is proved by Joseph's will of 1757.

In 1756 in Augusta Co, VA, Henry was in Captain Norwood's company with his father Joseph. There are two men named Henry Long in the unit. The other must have been Henry Long aka Lung. Also in this unit is John Gilmore. (In 1753, a Henry Long is listed as an ensign of foot. This is not likely our Henry.) In 1758, he was paid for service. In 1757, Henry, James Gilmore and Benjamin Watson listed in order as delinquents at muster of Captain Cloyd's unit. In 1779, He served as a soldier in Mongomery Co, VA, and received a warrant for fifty acres of land.
