Biography

Culwell was born on November 15, 1878 at Robbins in Scott County, Tennessee. He was the son of Richard ( Griffith ) Long and Emily ( Newport ) Long . He married Nancy Elizabeth Shannon on March 15, 1896 in Scott County. Culwell's father Richard used both the last names of Griffith and Long, some records have him listed as Griffith, while others list him as Long. Richard and his siblings were the illegitimate children of Anna Griffith and Riley Long, on October 2, 1888 Riley adopted the children so there last names were changed from Griffith to Long. Because Richard was married to Emily in 1874 and had several children at the time of the adoption in 1888, Culwell also used both the last names of Griffith and Long, sometimes calling him self Griffith and other times Long. Culwell worked as a farmer and died of gun shot wounds on October 27, 1934 at Oneida in Scott County, the shooting was ruled as a homicide.
