Served South Carolina Militia during Revolutionary War. Served at Siege of Ninety-Six and under General Marion.
Parents Matthew Long Elizabeth Montgomery
Matthew Long, James' father, first received a grant of 400 acres of land in 1765 in Granville County, SC on Roses/Rosses Creek of Savannah River. If Matthew Long ever lived in Georgia before his death, I have never found any record of it. Many researchers have James Long as born in Jackson County, Georgia. This county was not formed until 1796 which is 43 years after his birth. If Matthew Long was in Wilkes County, GA (early GA county bordering upper South Carolina), I have not found any record of it.
Married 1775 to Margery Thompson. Source: Widow's Pension Application for Revolutionary Service of her husband, James Long. This record includes the birthdates of several of the children of James and Margery Thompson Long. Also, the surviving children of Margery Long in 1850 applying for bounty land are listed with married names of two daughters.
