Biography

John Long is found in a family history record due to his relationship to the Ellis family that his daughter Elizabeth Long Ellis married into. According to that reference, he married twice and had four children with Elizabeth FRIAR: Elizabeth, Mary, Nancy and Samuel. He had a second wife (order of marriage uncertain, no name for second wife given in the record) and the children are listed as George, John, James, Edward, William, Bartlett, Martha, Susanna, and Margaret.[1]

His place of birth is recorded as Virginia in the 1850 census.[2]. At various times in the census of his daughter Elizabeth Ellis, his birthplace is listed as Georgia[3] or Pennsylvania.[4] The information for the latter entry was likely provided by his grandson.

Elizabeth Long Ellis was likely his eldest child and family information indicates she was born in 1820 in Rutherford Co., TN.[1] According to the birthplaces of his children given in the 1850 census, the family lived briefly in Alabama in about 1826. This may be where he met and married his second wife, Sylvaney as she is listed as having been born in Alabama. James and Martha are born in Tennessee around 1833-1836. Margaret, Susanna and Edward are born in Mississippi between the years of 1838 and 1842 and then the family returns to Tennessee with the births of William and John in 1845 and 1846.[2]

There is a John Long found in the 1840 census of Tippah County, MS. This is the county where his daughter married Rev. T.O. Ellis, MD in 1837. The John Long household has one male aged 5-10 and 2 aged 10-15, one male aged 40-50, one female under age 5, two aged 5-10, one aged 20-30 and one aged 30-40.[5] The ages of the children are consistent with the family history information. Interestingly, an Isaac FRYAR is enumerated on the same page, and is about the same age as John LONG. This could be the Isaac Friar who is noted to be the father-in-law of his wife Mary.[1]

In 1850 John Long, a farmer, with a wife Sylvaney is found living in Henderson County, Tennessee.[2]
