John Long immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Nowell Name Study.

John Long was born about 1627 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of Robert Long and Elizabeth Taylor Long.

Christening

10 February 1628/9 St. Albans, Herts., Hertfordshire, England

Emigration

"Jon" was aged 6 when his family emigrated c. 7 July 1635 on the Defense. [1]

Children: "The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown" lists 13 children: John, Mary, Abigail, Norton, Robert, Norton, Abigail, Sarah, Sarah, Isaac, Katherine, Mary, and Samuel. [2]

John's will mentions daughter Mary Sandiford (husband of Henry Sandiford - no Wikitree profiles) as well as his three children (Katherine, Samuel, and Mary) w/ second wife Mary. It also has the entry: "I give unto that child Abigail Long, so called, (who?) hath been brought by my Mother Stitson, deceased, ten shillings in money, to be paid her when she shall demand it; and no more." Probably married Elias Stone (bef.1660-1734)?

He is buried at Phipps Street Burying Ground, Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA

Research Notes

Did not marry in England to Mary (Norton) Long (abt.1630-). Prior version of this profile reported John married 1650 in Dunstable, Bedford, England, to Mary (Norton) Long (abt.1630-).

John Long is mentioned in the article "New Englanders at Sea" as a sea captain (Master of the ship "Consent") and was apart of the migratory expedition to Cape Fear (now North Carolina) in April 1662/3. The migratory expedition was subsequent to the exploratory expedition the previous year. These were under the auspices of "the Merchants' 'Commitee for Cape ffaire at Boston.'" This second expedition was not a roaring success and resulted in Capt. Long having to sue explorer participant Henry Douglas(s) for money damages upon return to Boston. The article cites the Middlesex County Court, Files, #2374 (not located), in Long vs. Douglas, Deposition of William Courser, sworn 16 June 1663.

I have no problems with this proposal

This is a proposal to sever association with the second listed spouse, linked as Mary (Norton) Long (abt.1630-), reporting a marriage "about 1650 in Dunstable, Bedford, England."

John's two marriages are given, with supporting references, in Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume IV, I-L (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2005), 316-320 (Robert Long) at 319 (son, John Long); digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors, cites "NEHGR 57:416"; "ChVR 1:16"; "Rogers 2:392"; "ChVR 1:89"; "GMB 2:1342-46"; "GMB 3:2030."
