William was born in 1836, the son of Barnabas Long (1813-1879) and Mary Ann Shutt (1815-1894).
He was baptized March 26, 1827 in Ripley, Yorkshire, England,
He married Elizabeth Paxton. They had the following children:
William George Long (1861-).
Mary Ann Georgina Long (1862–1927), who married Frederick James Purkiss (1862–1936).
John G Long (1866–1928).
George H. Long (1872–).
Francis Paxton "Frank" Long (1873–).
