Biography

Mildred (Long) Hughes was born in Yorkshire, England.

In 1921 Mildred worked as a domestic servant for the Blakey family at Park Farm in Howden, Yorkshire.^[4] Mildred later worked as an agricultural labourer for the Scutt family in Eastrington and as a barmaid.^[5] Her son, Cyril, was born in 1925.^[6]

In 1936 Mildred married Edward Hughes.^[7] At the time of the 1939 register, they lived at 29 Westfield Square, Goole, with Eddie's father, Robert. Both men worked at Goole's shipyard.^[8] Eddie died in 1958.^[9]

Mildred lived as a widow for 43 years. She remained active into her 80s, cycling around Goole. She died in 2001 at the age of 96.^[10]
