Major General Charles Edward Long CBE was born on 11th December 1913 at Moonah, Glenorchy, Tasmania, Australia. He was a son of James Joseph Long and Rebecca Turnbull.
On 25th May 1940, Charles was commissioned into the Second Australian Imperial Force and served throughout the Second World War. He was an officer in the Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. [1] Following the war, he transferred to the Australian Regular Army.
Charles, then a Brigadier, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours 1962. [2][3]
He made several brief fly-ins to Vietnam during that war as a Major General. [4]
He retired from the Australian Army on 11th December 1970, upon attaining 57 years of age.
Aged about 66 years, he passed away in 1980 in Victoria. [5]
