Biography

He was member of the home guard during the civil war and killed by local union supporters. HIs father put on his tombstone "killed by Tories", a phrase used to describe local people who supported the union. His younger brother Soloman Winston's wife's family had members that rode with the first Alabama Federal/Union Calvary. They protected Sherman as his personal bodyguard and were made up by men from North Alabama who were Union supporters , one was my great great great grandfather Stover(Stauffer). Robert Long , a cousin was a captain with the unit .
