THE LIMERICK LONGS
OF BALLYCHAHANE
AND BALLINAKILL
Compiled by

Page 1
PHILIP LONG of Ballycahane is the definitive common Long ancestor of all the Longs mentioned in this story. A record of the abstract of his will, made in August 1788, is found in the National Archives of Ireland. Probate to the will was granted in March 1789. This puts the date of his death in late 1788. Of his birth date, if we accept this hypothesis set out later in this story, we can assume about 1703
What do we know about Philip and his ancestors? Working backward from the above date, we find Philip recorded on the Freeholders Lists for Ballychane for 1776 and earlier in 1753.

Regarding: The PROTESTANT LONGS in Ireland

In reply to: Protestant Longs in Ireland
By: AYDAN CRANDALL_7/_04/_00
_________________________________________________________________
There was a LONG FAMILY who were among the refugees from the Palatine area of Germany who were settled by the English government primarily in County Limerick to increase the Protestant numbers.
The following citation is from:
THE PALATINE FAMILIES
Of Ireland
By Henry Z. Jones.
This Irish Family of PALATINESM was founded by JOHN and PETER LONG both of whom were on the list of Palatines in Ireland 13 July 1715 (but their names are widely separated hinting that there may have been no relationship between them).
A JOHAN LANG with 4 in the FAMILY was 'entered last' on the lists of Palatines in the 1st arrivals in London in 1709 (London Lists), but a JOHANNES LANG and 5 persons were returned to Holland in 1711 (Knittle, p. 281), JOHANNES LANG, his wife (ch.) BARBERA, PETER, CATHARINA, and 2 (additional) ch. were in the 2nd party in Holland in 1709 (Rotterdam Lists); he was the JOHN LANG, with his wife, sons aged 17, 12 and 6 Yrs., daughters aged 18 and 6 yrs., Ref., husbandman and vinedresser in the 2nd arrivals in England later that year (London Lists).
A PETER LANG, his wife and 2 ch., were in the 3rd party in Holland in 1709 (Rotterdam Lists); they were returned to Holland in 1709 (Knittle.., p. 277).
A JOHANN LANG and his wife were noted in the 5th party in Holland that year also (Rotterdam Lists).
It is difficult to determine which of these families at Rotterdam and London who did not go back to the continent were the Irish-Palatines.
JOHN LONG was a Palatine residing with Mr. Edw. Browne at Evelary in the County of Cork 29 Sept 1720 (Groves Papers).
Perhaps descendants of JOHN or PETER LONG moved to County Limerick. There was a: PHILIP LONG who was a freeholder at Ballyngarane in July 1747 and April 1755; perhaps he was the PHILIP LONG who was a freeholder at Ballycahane in January 1753 also. Many of the family settled near Pallas, as JAMES, DAVID, and JOHN LONG were Parishoners there in 1783.
JOHN LONG of the parish of Kilcornan, married 29th December 1778 BARBARA SWITZER (Rathkeale Chbk.) Perhaps this family moved to Adare, as a JOHN LONG erected a gravestone there 1 April 1817 'in memory of his daughter ELIZA
A GEORGE LONG Petitioned for land in Colonial New York with Paul Heck, Peter Sparling, and other Irish Palatines in 1765 (Calendar of Council Minutes 1668-183, p. 513)."

The following information contains those named and as described above by Henry Z. Jones as among the First, Second, Third, and Fifth Parties of Palatine Pioneers. While the complete compliment of names is shown only for the Second Party, and the others only showing excerpted surnames: Lang, for each I've provided the link to the site should you wish to review the full list of names. The Board of Trade List of First Party of Palatines in London, May 3, 1709
Note: In one place this list is referred to as May 6, 1709 and in another place May 3, 1709. ajberry
This list is the first of four lists of Palatines compiled up to June 16, 1709, by Reverend John Tribbeko and Reverend George Andrew Rupterti. The four lists include only the first 6,000 of the Germans to arrive in that year. The lists which contain information on the age and occupation of the head of the family, numbers and age of the members of the family and religion, may be found in the Public Record Office, C. O. 388/76, 56 ii, 64, and 68-70. They have been published without change in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Records (New York, 1909 and 1910), XL, 49-54, 93-100, 160-167, 241-248; XLI, 10-19. They are also published in L. D. MacWethy, The Book of Names especially Relating to the Early Palatines and the First Settlers in the Mohawk Valley (St. Johnsville, New York, 1933) in an alphabetical order and an abridged form. In the latter version there are errors, which are excusable because of the nature of the material but the bad alphabetizing of the names is not to be regarded so lightly.
Only the first of the four Board of Trade Lists (that of May 6, 1709) is included here because that group of 825 persons is unmentioned in the Embarkation Lists from Holland, which are here given in Appendix C. They were sent, as related in Chapter III, before the arrangement, by which the British government financed their passage to London, was well worked out. This first Board of Trade List given below has been carefully alphabetized, but the information given as to occupation, religion and age has not bee included here for a number of reasons: 1) it is accessible elsewhere, 2) it would crowd an already lengthy Appendix, 3) it would not conform to the Embarkation Lists which it is intended to supplement here. The abbreviation w. denotes the presence of the wife.

THE EMBARKATION LISTS FROM HOLLAND
These lists comprise the enumeration of five separate sailing of Palatines from Holland, as sent by the Rotterdam Commissioners, vanToren and van Gent, to Minister Dayrolle, who forwarded them to England. The lists were found in the Public Record Office, T 1/119, 6-10, 19-26, 68-72, 58-65, 79-82. They comprise notations of about 11,000 persons, by far the largest lists relating to this immigration, although even the Embarkation Lists are not complete. They lack the enumeration of the first party to sail in 1709, the 825 persons given in Appendix B. They do not include those Palatines who paid their own way to London or were sent by private charity in August and October, 1709 as related in Chapter III.
So far as possible, the enumerations have been retained in exactly the form in which the Dutchmen made them. This was considered most desirable for genealogists, who will use them to greatest advantage. For the ordinary reader, it may be necessary to explain further that "vrouw" means wife; "weduw", widow; "moeder", mother; "swister," sister; "knegt," servant. Of course, each sailing list has been alphabetized to facilitate their use. When names are indented, they are the names of children which happen to be mentioned, and they are not included in the additional number of children ending the line. (Because of the limitations of html, the names are directly below the parents' names. I sincerely hope the names are correct, it is tough typing lists of names. My apologies for the errors. ajberry)

Hi Berta
I only know a little but can put you in touch with LONG researchers who are not IP listers if you would like.
The following is information from two LONG researchers, one in Ireland, one in Canada (except PIPER connection):
The Long connection to the Palatines may be tenuous - their origin may be different but they may have teamed up with the Palatines at Rotterdam.
JOHN LONG (with wife and 4 or 5 children) settled in County Cork by Palatine Commissioners and the family was still there in 1723.
First trace of Longs in County Limerick is at Ballingrane in 1747 with JOHN's son PHILIP, who later moved to Ballycahane.

Note
In the spring of 1841 Joseph, and Messrs. Atkins, were engaged to establish a trail to the new settlement in Owen Sound. Before this date only an Indian footpath was in use. The Long party started out with three oxen and two sleds to widen this path to a trail from Cape Rich to Owen Sound (a trail having already been established from south of Big Head River (Meaford) to the Mallory settlement and Cape Rich.) Skirting Mountain Lake and crossing Sucker Creek to the Sydenham-St. Vincent Townline near Vail's Point the trail continued toward Owen Sound through the Balaclava, Johnston P.O. and Annan districts.
It took five days to reach Owen Sound and two days to return. The memory of this work has never been lost in the Long Family.

Index to freeholders of Limerick 1786 and 1776
JOHN FERRAR printed lists of voters in the County elections of 1768 and 1776 under the titles A complete list of the gentlemen, clergy, and freeholders (with their freeholds and places of abode) who voted at the election for knights of the shire for the County of Limerick: Which begun at St. Francis's Abbey on Monday the 11th, and ended the 18th day of July 1768. Sir H. Harstonge bart. Hugh Massy Esq; and Silver Oliver Esq; candidates Richard Taylor Esq; high sheriff and A list of the freeholders of the county of Limerick who voted at St. Francis's Abbey, at the election, began on Monday the 27th of May and ended on Wednesday the 5th of June, 1776, before Ben. Frend, Esq; high sheriff: Candidates, Right Honourable Silver Oliver, Sir Henry Hartstronge, bart. Hugh Massy, the younger, Esq .
Both these books are available at the National Library of Ireland and available to registered readers on the National Library of Australia.
These lists give for whom the people voted and their residence and the land for which they had freehold. These lists give valuable information for the family historian as they connect people and land.
The list below is an index to the two lists.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Phillip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Phillip:
