Biography

Henry was born about 1859. [1] He and his wife Catherine migrated to NZ in the 1893. He passed away in 1938 age 79. [2]

A well-known figure in the Whangarei district, Mr Henry Long, passed away on December 2 at the Whangarei District Hospital. Mr Long was born in Tasmania in 1859, and spent his early days mining in Broken Hill. He came to New Zealand in 1893, taking up gumdigging, and later farming at Towai. Ultimately he settled in Puwera where he remained for the rest of his life.

Mr Long enjoyed good health up to within a month of his "death. He was taken to the Mater Misercordiae Hospital, Auckland, a month ago, as a precautionary measure. Here he was given special treatment, but last week his condition became worse and, as was his wish, he was brought by ambulance to Whangarei. He failed to rally, however, ,and passed away on December 2.

An ardent supporter of the National Party, Mr Long had given a great deal of his time to assisting the party. Until the last few years he had served on school committees and hall committees, and had helped in other ways to promote the interests of his district. During the last census he covered the Maunu riding, entailing much travel and hard work. He carried it out successfully, however, in spite of his increasing years. Mr Long’s wife predeceased him 15 years. Since then his daughter, Mrs Moore, had taken care of him. Mr Long is survived by four sons and two daughters, the daughters being Mesdames J. Chapman, Omahuta, and L. A. Moore, Otaika, and the sons Messrs H. B. Long,, Marua, F. Long, Devonport, C. Long, Otaika, and T. Long, Whangarei. There are 15 grandchildren, while several brothers live in Australia.[3]
