Biography

Agnes was born about 1823,[1] probably in Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the daughter of John Long and Jane Cameron.

She was living in Gransha, Islandmagee at the time of her marriage to James Laverty, a sailor from Ballykeel, Islandmagee in 1849 in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. The witnesses were Robert Stevenson and Sarah Wilson.[2]

She Inherited her husband's entire estate on his death and was a 78 year old widow living with her sister Annie's family in Gransha, Islandmagee in 1901.[3]

Agnes died in 1903 in Gransha, Islandmagee, aged 80, from decay of nature. She is described as the widow of a farmer and her death was registered by Mary Hagan of Gransha who was present at her death.[4] She is interred in St. John's Church of Ireland Graveyard, in Islandmagee.[5]

    Erected by James Laverty in memory of his children, viz. John died on the 5th of December 1854 aged 2 years, Agnes died on the 1st of January 1860 aged 1 year, Annie Jane died on the 2nd of August 1862 aged 9 years, James died on the 6th of January 1868 aged 1 years, John was lost at sea in the year 1875 aged 19 years. The above-named James Laverty died 22nd Octr. 1899 aged 73 years. Also his wife Agnes Laverty who died 28th Jany. 1903 aged 80 years.
