Biography

A David Long was born abt 1650 along the James River, Virginia, son of John Long and Elizabeth Unk.

He arrived in Maryland in 1677 at age 27, transporting himself & wife Elizabeth & 3 children Mary, John & Thomas plus John Scott, Thomas Jones and Wm Stone. (Arrived in Maryland does not imply from abroad. He arrived from Virginia.) ^{[1] [2]} For transporting eight persons into Maryland he was awarded fifty acres for each person or a total of 400 acres of land in a warrant for land issued in 1677. ^[3] In 1682 at St. Mary City, David sold the 400 acres; this is possibly the time he obtained the farm "Winchester" in Kent Co., Maryland. No deed has been found for this transaction but reference to it is found in the deed for the sale of the farm "Winchester" by his son John in 1702. ^[4]

David Long died June 23, 1697, in Kent County, Maryland ^[5] Because David left no will and Mary Long.Wd. was listed as the administratrix of the estate, it appears that David had re-married to a Mary after wife Elizabeth died. ^[6]

Research Notes

• "Cecil Gene Long did an extensive study oLong ancestry with James Overhulls (of Norwalk, Ohio) who found only two David Longs for this time period in all of America. Cecil Long focused on the three men for whom David paid passage; these men were found together in Barbados, in Virginia along the James River, and later on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with Longs and Powells.

• The Jones, Scotts, and Stones signed wills and deeds of the Longs. Jane Powell, sister of Elizabeth Long, married a Jones, Morgan Jones was brother-in-law to John Herrington, the father of Ann(e) who married John Long II. This close proximity continued even to John Long II's journey to Green County, Pennsylvannia where he lived near Morgan and Robert Jones."

"David Long, planter, & Mary appear to be from Delaware and Maryland."

• Although the immigrant ancestor has not been determined, indications are strong that in the 1600's (sic) the Longs were residing in the area between the headwaters of the Chester & the Choptank Rrivers, in upper Queen Anne's County, Maryland. Both the Long family and the intermarried Herringtons are found in 1708. at the Church of England Parish known as St. Luke's Episcopal, at Church Hill, Maryland.
