John Long, my grandfather and your great grandfather with his family settled in Taunton (Mass.) where he lived and died. Matthew Taft ventured far away in the wilderness to a newly settled town, Upton, 30 miles from Boston & 26 miles from Taunton. A greater adventure then than now to go to California or Oregon where he located 4 hundred acres of land and settled himself and family in the year 1727. His sons, Robert, Matthew, & John when received back a fourth part....... Page 2 Our father and grandfather in the year 1741 purchased a fine lot of land adjoining Matthew Tafts. Ignorant of crossing the briney ocean in the same ship together.
