Biography

Arthur Long (b. abt. 1642, d. Oct. 3, 1677), a son of Robert Longe, and the grandson of Richard and Alice Long. He was the brother to Robert Long, John Long and Daniel Long. He was born in Isle of Wight, Virginia, and was likely married to Mary Allen, the daughter of Colonel Arthur Allen. [Boddie, Vol. 1 Southside Virginia Families, pg. 319.]

Arthur Long's connection to Robert Longe and Pagan Creek, Isle of Wight, can be traced through various land and probate proceedings.

In his Will, Arthur Smith of Warresquiak (Isle of Wight), referred to Arthur Long as his "godson," which suggests a connection to the Longe family in the Isle of Wight. [See attached Abstract; Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County, Virginia 1647-1800, pg. 330.] [1]

On January 11, 1661, George Smith of the Isle of Wight assigned a patent to Christopher Holliman, with the exception of 100 acres that had been given to Arthur Long, by Arthur Smith, his father, on or about 1645. [Id] Arthur Smith was granted this propert from Wm. Berkeley, who had first granted it to John Roe. The property contained 350 acres and was located on Cypress Swamp at the FRESHETT. [2]

By 1662, Arthur Long is believed to have married Mary Allen, the daughter of Arthur Allen, Sr., and moved to Surry County, Virginia, where it is noted that he sat on a coroner's jury.[Boddie, Vol. 1 Southside Virginia Families, pg. 319.]

By 1676, he had joined Nathaniel Bacon's rebellion, serving as the Captain of the Surry Rebels. Arthur Long's house was used as a place for food and supplies. [Id.] Link: https://m.virginiacolonialhouses.com/app/bacons-castle-%28the-people%29/9202174/36/

On September 18, 1767, caught up in the rebellion, Arthur Long seized his brother-in-law, Arthur Allen's brick House, forever giving it the name of (Nathaniel) Bacon's Castle and using it as their headquarters. He also ordered Arthur Allen's cattle slaughtered. [Id.] Link: https://preservationvirginia.org/visit/historic-properties/bacons-castle

After the collapse of the rebellion, Arthur Long was sued by his brother-in-law and found guilty. [Id.] On July 4, 1677, after serving time and giving "good security for his future good behavior," he was brought before Governor William Berkeley, the Court and Magistrates, and upon bended knees, with a noose around his neck, acknowledged his treasonous behavior and begged pardon for his life. (See attached.)

Thereafter, apparently ashamed of his actions, Arthur Long left his wife Mary (Allen) Long and moved to Perquimans, North Carolina. [Id.] Reportedly, he died at Caleb Calloway's house on October 3, 1677. [Id.]

On November 4, 1679, Mary (Allen) Long's Will was probated in Surry County, Virginia. It was presented by her father, Arthur Allen. In her Will, although she mentioned "six poor children," only four were named:

Arthur Long, Jr. (b. 1665 d. 1700) Elizabeth Long, Mary Long, and George Long - untraced. Edward [Unnamed.] Sarah [Unnamed.] m. Thomas Tarver

[Carrell, William P., The Allen Family of Surry County, Virginia: Its British Roots and Early Generations in America (2011), at pp. 18-20.]

Arthur Long's place of burial is unknown.
