He arrived in Hingham in 1867.[3]

He married first, in Hingham, on Sept. 13, 1870 to Mary Woodward Glover.[3]

John married secondly, May 22, 1886, Agnes Peirce.[3]

Mr. Long represented the town of Hingham at the General Court in 1875, 1876, 1877, and 1878 ; was Speaker of the House of Representatives 1876, 1877, and 1878; Lieut.-Gov. 1879 ; Governor, 1880, 1881, and 1882; and elected representative to the 48th, 49th, and 50th Congress of the United States from the Second Massachusetts Congressional District. [3]

John lived on Cottage Street in Hingham.[3]

He died on August 28, 1915, in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.[1][2] He is buried at Hingham Cemetery.[6]
